Merry Christmas, from your Union

It has been a big year for our members.

Together, we have confronted challenges nobody could have predicted.

Just as our members and many of our communities have stared off some of the nation’s worst natural disasters: extraordinarily devastating bushfires and floods, we were confronted with a once in 100 year pandemic.

For workers, business and government alike, the challenges of 2020 have been immense and unlike anything seen in our lifetimes.

CEPU members in particular have been at the forefront of the country’s pandemic response. Risking their health and safety, and that of those closest to them, heroically ensuring that some of our country’s most essential and critical services continued to serve our communities – to keep them connected.

And it’s not over.

But as I write this message, your Officials and I are preparing our roadmap to stare down the challenges confronting our members for the year ahead.

We will continue to expose and push back against unfair employment practices in the telecommunications industry and will be renewing our fight against the shambolic Alternate Day Delivery Model at Australia Post – which is failing postal workers and our communities, abysmally.

Bargaining for new EBAs at three of our largest employer groups will kick off in the new year. And whilst being cautious in respecting the unpredictable nature of the pandemic and its impacts, all indicators are pointing towards Australia being on the road to economic recovery.

Our members truly deserve to share in the reward of that recovery – and we will be there throughout those bargaining processes to fight for the very best possible outcomes for members and their families.

I know it has not been easy for our members to confront and stand up to the challenges we’ve faced together, this year.

I know you are tired and that many of you have been operating in environments that cast shadows on peak periods of years gone by. I hope that you all have the opportunity to take a decent breather and to stop to enjoy the season upon us.

During the upcoming festive period I encourage you to share the spirit of joy and selfless giving with our community’s most needy, your colleagues at work and your loved ones at home – particularly our children.

Please note, the CEPU NSW/ACT State Office will be closed from Thursday 24 December 2020 and will reopen for normal operations on Monday 4 January 2021.

However, should you require any urgent assistance during this period, please contact your CEPU Branch Official directly using the mobile phone numbers and email addresses listed at the bottom of this message.

I hope you’ll also be on the lookout for the upcoming Summer issue of The Communicator magazine, where we will take a look back at some of the year’s challenges and how our members were able to tackle them head-on. It should arrive in your letterboxes by the end of the year, in time to take advantage of some special offers for members and their families over the school holiday period that we hope you’ll enjoy.

On behalf of the Branch Committee of Management, Officials and Staff, I wish you and your loved ones a very merry Christmas and all the very best for a happy and successful 2021.

Be merry and, most importantly, be safe.

Yours faithfully,

SHANE MURPHY
