As part of ongoing discussions, Australia Post has shared the results of the independent testing the company commissioned after agreeing to withdraw the new hi-vis polos following member complaints and CWU representations.
ARPANSA Testing Confirms Polos Are Not SPF 50+
Australia Post has advised that testing conducted by the Australian Radiation Protection & Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) has confirmed that the new hi‑vis polos do not meet the claimed SPF 50+ protection level.
Following these findings, Australia Post has instructed its supplier to provide a replacement hi‑vis polo.
Next Steps: Replacement Garments Being Prioritised
Australia Post has indicated it is now working with its suppliers to source appropriate replacement hi‑vis polos as a priority.
Any proposed replacement garment will undergo further ARPANSA testing to ensure it is fit for purpose.
In the meantime, members should continue wearing interim sun-safe clothing, including previous‑issue uniform polos where possible, until further notice.
This is consistent with the precautionary advice we communicated to members in our earlier bulletin.
Union Position
The CWU acknowledges Australia Post’s timely response to the concerns raised by members and the Union by withdrawing the affected uniforms, and its decision to undertake independent testing. These steps have provided clarity for our members across the delivery network and confirmed the need for a replacement garment.
Our advice remains:
- Wear your old uniform wherever possible.
- If you no longer have old garments, Australia Post will provide appropriate sun‑safe alternatives while this process continues.
- If you encounter any issues at the workplace level, including pressure or conflicting instructions, contact your CWU Central Branch Official immediately.
In addition to the polo shirt issue, members have raised a number of concerns about the broader uniform rollout, particularly regarding comfort and suitability. These matters remain the subject of ongoing discussions with Australia Post.
We will continue engaging with Australia Post and monitor the testing and replacement process closely. We will keep members informed as new information becomes available.
