Telstra is considering outsourcing as many as 1200 more “back-of-house” jobs, according to press reports earlier this month.

The Australian Financial Review said that the plan was part of Project New which aims to cut costs and simplify the company’s operations – while at the same time supposedly improving customer service.

The AFR report said that a Request for Proposal had been issued for finance and accounting services and that vendors such as IBM and HP Enterprise Services were intending to bid for it.

Telstra has said that it has no specific plans to cut the 1200 jobs but has not denied issuing the RFP. In other words, the move is underway but has not been fine-tuned yet. It is likely to see jobs not only outsourced but also sent off-shore as has been the case with many other functions, such as IT and call centre work.
