Earlier this year a pilot program was undertaken by Australia Post involving drivers from NSW and Victoria to assess the benefits (if any) in training drivers to improve their driving styles and habits to improve the impact on the environment by reducing Australia Posts carbon emissions.

The results of the trial show that of the 3 training methods used, those trial participants who underwent the online interactive training returned the best results on average. As a result Australia Post has informed the CEPU that they intend to roll out this training to all drivers in NSW/ACT.

The main objective of the E- Drive programme is to enhance driver knowledge and skill to support the ongoing initiative to reduce carbon emissions. The program will focus on driver behaviours that are known to have an impact on the quantity of carbon Australia Post vehicles emit into the environment. These behaviours include harsh braking, over revving, idling, use of cruise control and maintenance of correct tyre pressures.

The E-Drive program is an interactive, online program that will be supported by transport supervisors, managers and Learning and Development. The training will be conducted on an allocated computer on site at the drivers work location and the training will be undertaken “on duty”.

There will be no negative impacts on drivers as this training will be scheduled through their normal work hours

The CEPU supports this initiative not only because of the environmental advantages of reducing carbon emissions but any opportunity to improve or enhance a drivers skill and knowledge base can only be of an advantage to individual drivers.
