CEPU – delivering for postal transport workers

The Communications Electrical Postal Plumbing and Allied Services Union (CEPU) is the major union for transport workers in Australia Post where it has been delivering above-industry conditions for decades.

Those conditions are secured by awards and agreements which CEPU members have fought hard for. They include shorter hours of work and better redundancy pay-outs than those achieved by other unions in the wider transport industry.

Make the comparison yourself, starting with the basic building block –the industry award.

When you drive for Australia Post you are already ahead in terms of working hours and leave entitlements thanks to the efforts of the CEPU and it members.

The recent Australia Post Enterprise Agreement extends this lead. Compare the wage rates that Australia Post drivers enjoy to those the Transport Workers Union (TWU) signed off on in their latest agreement with Australian Air Express.

As the table shows, the maximum wage available to drivers under the TWU agreement is $39,105.

What’s more Australia Post drivers also get tonnage allowances over and above their salaries – $3.74 a day for the equivalent of a TW Grade 3 up to $17.38 a day for the equivalent of a TW Grade 7.

But better wages are only one part of the story. Here are some other advantages Australia Post drivers enjoy compared to those covered by the Australian Air Express agreement.

The CEPU has been able to secure these advantages for postal transport employees because it knows the Australia Post business and knows Australia Post’s drivers – most of them are already our members.

Don’t be misled into thinking that postal sector outsiders can offer better wages and conditions than those delivered by our current awards and agreements.

Stick with the CEPU or- if you are not a member – join up today.
