As part of reducing its carbon footprint, Australia Post is investigating the possible benefits of installing aero dynamic body kits to its heavy rigid (HR) 28ULD vehicles.
These kits consist of cabin extenders and roof scoops which seal the gap between the rear of the truck cabin and the front of the body of the vehicle. As the Mercedes Benz HR vehicles are supplied with a roof scoop fitted as standard, it is our intention to investigate the possible benefits of including a cabin extender.
The fitting of cabin extenders as an aero dynamic enhancement for the HR vehicles is anticipated to reduce fuel consumption between 2% – 8% which of course has a flow on affect to the carbon emissions of the vehicle.
Australia Post propose to fit one vehicle located at Melbourne Transport Facility which with a cabin extender to assess its suitability. Data requirements regarding fuel consumption will be captured using the My-Fleet system.
The impact or additional requirement of Transport Drivers is expected to be nil however drivers are encouraged to provide feedback directly to Post and the CEPU on the cabin extender enhancement.
