Following intervention of your NSW Branch of the union with Australia Post at the National level over their employee locker policy decision – Australia Post has now confirmed ceasing the rollout of the locker policy until further notice.
NSW Branch Secretary Jim Metcher has issued the following statement to Australia Post this morning:
We are pleased that you have finally confirmed Australia Post’s decision with ceasing the rollout of this policy.
Whilst we acknowledge the right of the Corporation to introduce sensible policy, it is also a right for CEPU members who are Post employees to be treated with the dignity and respect to who they actually are – being mature sensible adults.
I know it can be hard to believe at times, but Post employees are no different to management representatives who are overwhelmingly made up of mums and dads.
So why management think there is a need to treat its workers like children and/or have to embark on draconian type behaviour in threatening its workers every time a policy announcement is determined and communicated – is just bizarre.
It appears that some within the management group just don’t get it – given if they haven’t noticed, we all live and work in a modern society and have actually moved on from what may have been acceptable within the community 200 years ago.
Union representatives along with its membership are always available to engage in sensible mature consultation with representatives of the Corporation on any policy matter and accepts your offer to continue these discussion in an effort to establish a contemporary approach when determining and communicating policy matters to employees.
The approach taken to date is just unacceptable to the union and employees of Post who are members of the Union.
I await for contact to be initiated with my office for discussions to be facilitated.
JIM METCHER
BRANCH SECRETARY
Members will be informed on developments in association with the Australia Post locker policy as they occur. In the meantime members should report any instances of management making any threats or more so actually taking any employee locker away and/or commencing disciplinary action against any employee for failing to sign locker policy documentation.
