Casual workers making sure Australians receive their cards and parcels in time for Christmas won’t see a cent for their work until the new year, the CEPU postal workers’ union said today.
Australia Post is holding back the pay of thousands of Christmas casual mail sorters who started work as of December but have not seen any pay for their efforts.
Many casuals working are students and low-income earners who can’t afford to wait weeks and weeks before being paid for their work, said CEPU NSW Secretary Jim Metcher.
“These workers who help manage the spike in mail during December are essential to Australians receiving their Christmas goodies on time and enjoying the festive season.
“Yet there’s no merry Christmas for them, as they won’t see their pay until 1 January.
“Australia Post is more than well-enough resourced to make sure Christmas casual employees are paid – and paid in time to enjoy Christmas with their families.
“Australia Post is playing Grinch with these workers’ pay and breaking the terms of the employment agreement covering postal workers which provides for these workers to be paid within a fortnight of work being carried out.
“Australia Post is not some two-bit operation but a major, reputable employer – this shambolic approach to pay isn’t good enough.”
The CEPU is demanding Christmas casuals employees of Australia Post be paid immediately and has sought for an urgent hearing to be listed by the Fair Work Commission to ask for their help for these employees receive their statutory pay entitlements, no different to any other employee in the country.
