New polling shows strong opposition to measures to downgrade Australia Post mail delivery or sell off the iconic postal service.

CEPU Postal Union NSW Secretary Jim Metcher said Australia Post should take note of Essential Research figures out yesterday, showing a large majority of Australians opposed shifting from daily to three times a week mail delivery.

The Essential Research poll of 1,010 people nationally showed 63 percent opposed the move to three day a week mail delivery flagged by Australia post last week. http://essentialvision.com.au/changes-to-mail-delivery

The same poll showed strong opposition to privatisation of Australia Post, a measure being considered by the Federal Government’s Commission of Audit.

Sixty nine percent of voters opposed privatising Australia Post, with the sale of the postal service attracting the most opposition among a range of government-owned corporations. http://essentialvision.com.au/support-for-privatisation

The research findings confirmed Australia Post’s valued position in the community and the risks in messing with its trusted service, said Mr Metcher.

“Australia Post is operating profitably, even while small letter volumes decline,” he said.

“Australia Post isn’t broken – and it doesn’t need this kind of drastic ‘fixing’.

“Rather, downgrading mail services or selling off Australia Post would undermine confidence in the trusted brand and lead to fewer people using it.

“Postal services are just like health and education – they’re just one thing better off kept in public hands, where they can best serve the community and not their shareholders.”

Postal workers rallied in Strathfield yesterday with the message ‘Hands off Aussie Post’.

Protests would be held nationwide against any move to downgrade or sell off the postal service, said Mr Metcher.

“The message to the Federal Government from the community and from employees is loud and clear: don’t mess with Australia Post.”
