The Chairman of Australia Post is totally out of touch with Federal Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull, his customer base and importantly the organisation’s 33,000 nationwide workforce
Australia Post Chairman John Stanhope has been quoted in today’ media supporting additional user pay charges to customers for the delivery of postal products and backing in the full privatisation of the nation’s postal service.
The Commission of Audit report last week recommended that Australia Post be privatised despite being explicitly rejected by Minister Malcolm Turnbull on more than one occasion.
NSW CEPU Secretary Jim Metcher said today that Mr Stanhope’s comments also fly in the face of public opinion and the views of Australia Post’s workforce.
“When the idea of privatising Australia Post was floated in January, 69 per cent of voters rejected it outright in an Essential poll. In contrast just 20 per cent supported the idea,” Mr Metcher said today.
“While the business lobby-dominated Commission of Audit has bowled the idea up again, it is deeply unpopular with both the public and the workforce.
“In this context it is bizarre that Australia’s Post Chairman would be wading into a contested public debate sprouting an ideological view of a public owned asset that is so out of step with the people he represents, – the Australian taxpayer,” he said.
Postal workers are gearing up for a major community campaign against any Federal Government move to privatise Australia Post in next week’s federal budget.
