The Union representing Australia Post employees has welcomed news the Federal Government has ruled out privatising Australia Post.
Finance Minister Matthias Corman said the Government wouldn’t act on the Commission of Audit’s recommendation to sell the postal service.
It is timely recognition of Union concerns that selling Australia Post off to the highest bidder would cost thousands of jobs, reduce services and hit regional Australia, said CEPU Postal Union NSW Secretary Jim Metcher.
“Postal workers, community members and businesses around Australia will be greatly relieved,” said Mr Metcher.
“Privatisation of Australia Post would have resulted in the closure of hundreds of Post Offices around the country and a downgrading of other postal services.
“However, the promise not to sell off the postal service for now does not in itself secure a strong public future for Australia Post.
“Australia Post workers would welcome working together with the Government on a plan for maintaining and improving the quality services and financial security of the postal service.
“Australia Post currently delivers a profit back to the Government – due to the hard work and commitment to innovation demonstrated by postal workers across the service.
“Postal workers and the community deserve nothing less than a solid commitment by the Federal Government to maintaining a strong national public postal service that meets people’s needs in a changing economy,” Mr Metcher said.
