The $116.2 million profit reported today shows Australia Post can afford to continue providing secure jobs for workers and quality, reliable mail services to Australian communities, according to the union representing postal workers.

CEPU NSW Postal and Telecommunications Branch Secretary Jim Metcher said the small after-tax profit announced in Australia Post’s annual report shows important reforms can be made, without resorting to cuts in job numbers, post offices or universal and affordable postal services overall.

“Today’s profit announcement shows present decline in letter volumes and associated costs can be offset by the performance and returns with parcel volumes and retail revenues,” Mr Metcher said today.

“Post employees are stepping up to the task of making the necessary adjustments that allow Australia Post to navigate its way through a dramatically changing retail and communications landscape.

“A clear demonstration of this flexibility is the new role for postal workers in delivering small parcels. Only three years, posties never delivered small parcels.

“Now posties deliver 29% of parcel volumes, making a significant contribution to the $330 million profit on parcels for the business.

“All Postal workers have a positive role to play in the way Australia Post adapts its business model and service delivery.

“The figures revealed in today’s annual report shows that the hard work and commitment of all employees is paying off for a future sustainable Australia Post.

“Post must therefore do the right thing by its employees and ensure they are not victims of short-sighted cost-cutting measures.

“Post must also maintain its commitment to continue with its important community service obligations with the delivery of all mail products five days a week.

“Businesses and communities across Australia rely on an affordable, reliable and efficient postal service and Australia Post can’t afford to lose its reputation as a trusted brand,” Mr Metcher said.
