The Union representing the largest group of Australia Post workers says a modest increase in postage must be seriously considered if it will help protect the sustainability of the postal service and jobs.
CEPU NSW Secretary Jim Metcher said the benefits Australia Post provides to the wider community were far reaching, especially the job opportunities and diversity of services within rural and regional areas across the nation.
“The way Australians communicate is undergoing a revolution and Australia Post must adjust and innovate its business model to keep up with change,” Mr Metcher said today.
“However, the best way for Post to improve its efficiency and protect sustainability is to also do the right thing by its workforce.
“The $116.2 million profit reported by Australia Post for the past financial year shows important sensible reforms continue to be made without being forced or resorting to cuts in job numbers, post office outlets or jeopardizing universal and affordable postal services overall.
“The decline in letter volumes and associated costs can be offset by the performance and returns with an innovated business model producing new revenues.
“Australian Postal workers must also have a positive role to play in the way Australia Post adapts its business model and service delivery.
“Businesses and communities across Australia rely on an affordable, reliable and efficient postal service and Australia Post can’t afford to lose its reputation as a trusted brand,” Mr Metcher said.
