Australia Post must guarantee a fair days pay for postal workers

The postal union today called on Australia Post to review its arrangements with contractors to ensure all workers are receiving their legal wages and entitlements.

In the wake of ABC’s revelations that an Australia Post contractor was paying as little as $1.10 for delivering a parcel and withholding legal entitlements like sick leave, CEPU Postal and Telecommunications NSW Branch Secretary Jim Metcher said Australia Post owed it to its workers to carry out a thorough  audit of every contractor and sub-contractor employment arrangements.

“Australia Post has today asked us to go on faith that this is an isolated incident and has asked workers to report any ‘suspicion of wrongdoing’, but this passive approach just doesn’t go far enough.

“Australia Post has to take some responsibility in ensuring inappropriate sham contracting arrangements within its workplaces are identified and removed through a thorough internal audit and investigation.

“The results of this investigation should be made public to restore the nation’s confidence in Australia Post,” Mr Metcher said.

While the Australian Federal Police have reportedly worked with Australia Post on the case of one Victorian contractor, they also say they work with 3,500 contractors on a daily basis around the country.

“This could well be the tip of the iceberg.

“Australia Post must do the right thing by its employees and ensure they are not victims of dodgy contractor employment arrangements,” said Mr Metcher.
