For members employed by Australia Post and Telstra – in discussions with both employer groups today, commitments have been made to pay members in areas affected by these devastating bushfires. This applies to members who cannot attend for duties due to it being unsafe to commute and those who have properties under threat.
There is no automatic entitlement to leave of such a kind and your Union is today commending both Post and Telstra for making these commitments.
With everything members in affected areas have on their minds at this time, worrying about whether funds will be available to meet their weekly expenses won’t be one of them.
Both employers have also confirmed their commitment to WHS legislation in ensuring any member who is unable to be provided with a safe work environment due to poor air quality and goes home will not be docked or be forced to avail of their entitlements. Please ensure you follow the instructions we have repeatedly posted on this matter – make yourself available for reasonable alternate indoor duties first, if none are available or if the workplace becomes unsafe due to extreme heat or smoke inundation – advise you will be going home.
As always, please contact us if you require any assistance in addressing these matters.
