Credit where it is due – despite having previously accredited the AP Health and Safety Representatives’ Course (HSR) Comare has now decided to suspend the course because it does not meet Comcare’s guidelines requirements.

The new guidelines titled, Guidelines – Health and Safety Representatives training in the Commonwealth jurisdiction arise out of a Comcare Review of Commonwealth HSR Training Course Accreditation Program in 2009-2010.

Criticisms of the Post HSR training course relate to course materials too unwieldy to use, shortfalls in skills development activities and knowledge, the need for clear delineation of the powers of HSRs and significant amounts of non HSRs training content and additional resource material.  Positive findings include the workplace hazard and control was well done.

Major work is required for the Australia Post course to meet the requirements of the Comcare Guidelines.   To that end, Australia Post is now working with both Comcare and the CEPU (curiously Comcare and Post were tardy in informing the CEPU of the suspension of the course)to ensure the course will satisfy the Guidelines requirements when next submitted for re-accreditation by the SRC Commission

Under the Commonwealth OHS Act 1991 HSR training must be provided through a course that is accredited by the Safety Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission (SRCC).  The SRCC has delegated the power to accredit courses to Comcare.

HSRs not yet trained should attend external Comcare accredited courses at local Trades and Labour Councils. Contact the CEPU if you require training.
