New post office retail store must benefit postal workers and the public

Australia Post launched plans for a new Post Office Retail Store and improved training for retail employees last week.  ‘The  ‘post office of the future’ will offer a range of new services to customers and greater access, convenience and choice in the way they transact with Australia Post.   A key feature of the announcement was the Future Skills Training program for frontline employees.

The CEPU sought and obtained Australia Post’s assurance that the new Post Office Retail Store will not reduce the number of branches or accessibility to the public – and we will be doing all we can to hold them accountable for this said CEPU Divisional Secretary Cameron Thiele.

This new concept has the potential to expand Post’s services to the public, to provide a better and more accessible environment for customers, and better work environment by its separation of services which has the potential to reduce queues.

“Shorter queues would be welcomed by our members and the public,” Mr. Thiele said.

The store will offer a dedicated area for online shopping, a travel services zone and a private lounge where customers can complete more complex financial and identity services transactions, 24/7 zone with parcel lockers where customers can pick up their parcel at any time, a vending machine with packaging products and a self-service terminals where they can quickly pay a bill or weigh, and post parcels as well as an ATM.

The Brisbane GPO has been chosen as the first site for the new store, which was also the location of the first PostShop back in October 1989.  The concept store at Brisbane GPO is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The CEPU will be working to ensure these initiatives – whether the store or the new retail staff training – are done in a way that benefits employees and the public.”
