Motorcycle Pre-Ride Safety Check time increased from 5 minutes to 10 minutes

Delivery members would be aware of the long standing debate with Australia Post Senior Delivery Management over the appropriate time allocated in Post’s daily assessment systems with regards to the Pre Ride Motorcycle Safety Check.

Australia Post has for a number of years only allocated 5 minutes for this mandatory safety check in the various assessment systems utilised by Australia Post to determine PDO daily work assessments. These assessment systems included DELMOS, MOS and now MDCS. The Union has always maintained a position that the time it takes to perform this Safety Check should be such that no PDO is under pressure to take shortcuts or not complete the Safety Check accurately.

Following further discussion with Post at the National level it was agreed that a proper investigation and review of the current time to perform the Safety Check would take place involving local AURs and Delivery Management across nominated Delivery Facilities across all States over a two-week period.

The nominated Delivery Facilities in NSW/ACT were Newport DC, Nth Ryde DC, Nepean Delivery Facility and Alexandria Delivery Facility.

As a result of this review Australia Post have now conceded that the prior 5 minutes allocated to perform the Pre Ride Motorcycle Safety Check is not sufficient and from Monday 15 October 2012 the new revised time to perform the Safety Check will be 10 minutes

The 10 minutes is to perform the Pre Ride Motorcycle Safety Check only. The 5 minutes for putting on PPE/sunscreen is additional to this time. In total PDOs will now have 15 minutes to perform these duties.

The Union wishes to thank all the PDOs at the nominated sites who took part in the review.  Without their professional input this positive result would not have been achieved.
