Footwear and Hosiery allowances apply to all retail staff

Branch Officials are currently visiting retail workplaces across NSW and the ACT and a matter which continues to be raised is about members’ entitlements to various clothing related allowances.

Members should take note of the allowances below and ensure their purchases meet guidelines and any style requirements provided for in the Clothing Manual.

Shoe allowance – Retail employees are entitled to reimbursement of up to $96 per year for appropriate footwear.
Hosiery allowance – Retail employees are entitled to reimbursement of up to $316 per year, or $79 per quarter, for appropriate hosiery purchases.

Reimbursement for the purchase of appropriate footwear or hosiery is payable after an employee presents the retailer’s receipt, along with a sample of the footwear or hosiery purchase, directly to their supervisor.

The supervisor will ensure the product purchased complies with any guidelines and style requirements contained in the Clothing Manual.

Presentation of a sample of the purchase is necessary to comply with the Australian Taxation Office’s guidelines for reimbursement of such purchases.

Relief staff should send their receipt to their relevant Network Office for processing of their reimbursement.

Members who are not familiar with the guidelines or style requirements contained in the Clothing Manual should ask their supervisor to view the manual to ensure they make appropriate purchases.

Members who have made an appropriate purchase and are having difficulty in seeking reimbursement should contact the Union Office for assistance from their Branch Official.
